About Zoe Liu
Zoe Liu is an illustrator based in Syracuse, NY. As she likes storytelling and creates illustrations for all kinds of stories, Zoe fills her work with bold colors and playful figures.
She graduated from the Sichuan Fine Art Institute with a BFA in Integrated Arts in 2012 and has an MFA in Illustration from Syracuse University in 2022. We had an exclusive interview with her!
Hello! Let’s start from the basics. What’s your name, and where have you grown up?
Hello there. My name is Zoe Liu, and I grew up in Chongqing, China.
When or how have you understood you wanted to become an artist?
I have wanted to be an artist since I was a child.
Please briefly describe your technique and tell us what drives you to make art.
I can draw in different mediums. Drawing makes me focused and relaxed. Many people who like to draw are introverts, and it is a way to communicate with others.
What is the main feature that has changed in your work or practice?
As I get older and have more life experiences, my understanding of art will become different, which will be visible in my works.
Which artist primarily inspires your work? And is there something else, outside visual arts, that keeps you motivated?
I like Tove Jansson and Zdeněk Miler; their cartoons have greatly influenced me. Reading and outdoor activities also motivate me to create.
How would you like people to engage with your work?
I want people to engage with my work in a personal way.
