Tabby Booth’s Art Narrative

Tabby’s passion for interior design is evident in every piece she crafts, each thoughtfully designed to weave together narratives that celebrate the natural world and human imagination. Tabby infuses her work with rich themes of mythical beasts, folklore, and the mystical allure of the sea, all while echoing the captivating essence of outsider art.

“The best things in life are about contrast, and for me, nothing looks better on a wall than that rich, bold silhouette. It works in any size, colour, and just as well as on its own, combined with other styles and textures. It has the power to transform the character of a space. I love to play around with the juxtaposition of something that looks like an ancient relic, yet with a naive and whimsical element that doesn’t take itself too seriously.”

Latest Work and Technique

Her latest work draws inspiration from the ancient art of scrimshaw, which involves etching designs into bone and ivory. She reinterprets this tradition with a modern sensibility. Using the sgraffito technique, Tabby layers paint and wax onto wood. Then she carves out intricate details with sharp tools to create richly textured and striking compositions. Each piece is uniquely crafted to blend contemporary artistry with a sense of history and nostalgia.

I’ve always had an illustrative style and have been a natural designer. I have often felt torn between this and traditional painting, which I also love. For a while, I wasn’t sure if I could do both, but now I believe that the two can work in harmony, and my style binds them together.”
