Berlin-based and raised Julia Hosse has indeed that sparkle when it comes to drawing. She began as a child, as it is for the majority of us, although she explains: “Some children just don’t stop. And I was one of them. As you draw more you get better, like an athlete or a musician. And when you get better you get more praise. And when you get praise you want more praise. It’s as simple as that. (And a bit embarrassing.) Suddenly you’re 28 and that’s who you are: A person who draws and no other skill.”
She completed her Master degree in illustration at the University of Applied Science in Hamburg, Germany, in the Design Department, so we suppose her academic years went through while drawing and reading, as this is her other big love. She likes to admit:”I was a ‘Stubenhocker’, as you say in German ( = a person who sits at home). Once outside I loved to climb trees, rocks, anything, everything looked different from high up.”. Hence this is what we understand by briefly interviewing Julia, she still remains one of those grown-ups who still are fascinated by other perspectives and ways of looking at the world around. Her drawings are very emotive and there is always a focus on the atmosphere and the dynamism around her. As she has mainly always worked with coloured pencils and primed colours, she took the advantage of starting from a middle ground and applying shadows and light, to create her unique and unusual effect. “(…)but I also work with ink a lot, but I don’t want to bore you, so I’ll stop right here.”
Julia Hosse definesherself as a freelance illustrator and comic artist, with no big intention to be represented by a gallery, despite she collected several exhibitions this current year already. Three of these are still upcoming, one during the Hamburg Comicfestival in October and the other two always in Hamburg in the next three months. In May 2017 her picture essay on memory was nominated for the Leibinger-Comic-Prize, which is one of the best awards for comic artists in Germany. The book will be published in German by Büchergilde Gutenberg in Spring 2018. She is then currently working on a new comic/graphic novel which she doesn’t yet reveal nothing about it, though we only know for sure that her main future aim is to keep drawing for independent projects like this one.
