ABOUT DAUMANTAS ERCMONAS
Daumantas Ercmonas was born in 1992 in Vilnius, Lithuania. After accomplishing his degree in Physical Education & Sport Sciences, he worked as a kickboxing instructor and physical education teacher. Daumantas Ercmonas is part of st-Art Amsterdam.
Daumantas, how have you understood you wanted to become an artist despite not having an art-related academic background?
I slowly built up my enthusiasm for art after moving to Amsterdam and discovering the city’s creative culture. I did not have any thoughts of painting after moving right away. It started slowly as a new activity, became a hobby, and later it became my biggest passion.
It is now 4 years since I started to paint and consider myself a self-taught artist. I continually learn about painting techniques and art overall. I wasn’t expecting this turnover in life, from a sports teacher to an artist, I mean.
Can you briefly describe what you do and say something about your technique?
I paint canvases using acrylic paint. I love to explore and see myself trying different styles and topics. Mostly I practice abstract, cityscapes, portraits, surrealism.
And what drives you to make art?
Self-expression, the joy of creative exploration, and the growth through daily practice. I like the idea of inspiring others, showing my message, my thoughts about life, the way I see life, my perspective of reality.
During these four years of artistic practice, what is the main feature that has changed in your works throughout time?
The more I paint, the more I think about the optimal subject and the message I want the viewer to receive. I focus on the idea and each artwork’s concept more than how I will paint it out. As I started, I struggled with methods and ways of expressing myself, but the more I practice, the easier it becomes to put my thoughts on the canvas in a way that satisfies me. Combining realism with abstract textures for problematic areas in work is something I have learned to save me time and bring a new exciting pattern for the people looking at the finished artwork.
And how would you like people to finally engage with your work?
I want people to think through art. I want people to enjoy the pretty colors and think about the idea that hides behind the painting. The concept of the work as well as the way it was painted. The methods the artist used in his work shows us a lot about the personality and character. I believe we can all get something valuable from looking at a piece of art. We can see the revealed thoughts of the person that did it and the state he was in his mind in that particular moment he did the artwork.
Where do you see yourself in the future?
I am an artist at heart. I will continue to create things. Different periods of life elevates us and leads us to new undiscovered directions that we are not aware of yet.
Daumantas gets art very seriously despite not having studied it. He is an excellent example of how empowerment can work well if the mind stays open to any possibility in life. He chose change as part of a creative path from which he undoubtedly gains a lot more than simple art techniques.
Outside art and sports, his high inspiration dose also comes from great depth topics such as people and social issues, life and death, or reality towards dreams.
As an artist, Daumantas has been exhibiting in Amsterdam’s several spaces, including a few coffee shops, a small gallery, and a hotel. He also did a live painting session, worked on painting requests/commissions. Daumantas continues studying and deepening art by himself, using the internet’s power and exploring the wide range of museums that the Netherlands offers. He is currently part of st-Art Amsterdam.
