David Carson, born on September 8, 1955, in Corpus Christi, Texas, is an American graphic designer and art director. Before entering the realm of graphic design, Carson was heavily involved in professional surfing, achieving a global ranking of ninth in 1989. He pursued his studies at San Diego State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. At the age of 26 Carson discovered his passion for design during a two-week commercial design course at the University of Arizona. This pivotal experience led him to further studies at the Oregon College of Commercial Art and a workshop in Switzerland.

In 1984, he became the art director for Transworld Skateboarding, where he started experimenting with innovative layouts and typographic styles. One of his most controversial design choices involved publishing an entire interview in the Zapf Dingbats font, rendering the text illegible and challenging traditional notions of readability.
