EMERGING ARTISTS UNDER 40 YEARS OLD
These emerging artists are all born after 1980 and according to Christie’s, the followings are artists whose reputations and markets are on the rise.
Although you are not willing to invest in art, it’s worth just reading to view what emerging and young talents are up to in these challenging times!
Jordaan Casteel
Jordan Casteel (b. 1989, Denver, CO) is an emerging talent that has rooted her practice in community engagement, painting from her photographs of people she encounters. Posing her subjects within their natural environments, her nearly life-size portraits and cropped compositions chronicle personal observations of the human experience.
Casteel received her B.A. from Agnes Scott College, Decatur, GA for Studio Art (2011) and her M.F.A. in Painting and Printmaking from Yale School of Art, New Haven, CT (2014).
In March 2019, Casteel was the breakout star of Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Auction. Lot 1, Patrick and Omari, her double-portrait from 2015, was fought over by nine bidders before selling for £299,250 against an estimated £40,000-60,000. It was only the artist’s second work, who had just turned 30, to appear at Christie’s.
Loie Hollowell
Loie Hollowell (b. 1983) is described as a modern-day Georgia O’Keeffe.
Hollowell evokes sensual experience through abstract geometries, delighting in the erotic overtones of her undulating forms, using geometric shapes to move a figure or its actions into abstraction.
Originally an autobiography, her work explores themes of sexuality, often through allusions to the human form, emphasizing women’s bodies.
Her work then shifted toward abstraction, characterized by radiating symmetrical silhouettes and a pulsating color palette.
In September 2019, art-world insiders speculated that prices for Loie Hollowell, which had gone from just a few thousand dollars to more than $100,000 per picture in only three years, could soon pass the million mark. A month later, the artist made her debut in a Christie’s evening sale with one of her psychedelic paintings of curvaceous forms selling for £359,250.
Harold Ancart
Harold Ancart (born 1980) is a Belgian painter and sculptor. He currently lives and works in New York City.
Ancart studied at La Cambre in Brussels, Belgium, where he received an M.F.A. in 2007.
In 2018 the Belgian artist mounted his first U.K. solo show with David Zwirner gallery in London.
According to one review, several big-name collectors came to see his abstract canvases They were not aware that his auction record had been set at Christie’s two years earlier when Triptych: Untitled, sold for $751,500 against an estimate of $80,000-120,000.
Ancart is frequently compared to the Abstract Expressionist Clyfford Still. He recently completed a monumental site-specific painting for the front window of the Centre Pompidou-Metz, shown as part of the group exhibition Painting the Night (2018-2019).
Tala Madani
Tala Madani (born 1981), is an Iranian-born American artist, best known for her contemporary paintings, drawings, and animations. She lives in Los Angeles, California.
Mandani was born in Tehran, Iran. From the age of seven, she studied calligraphy and painting. In 2006, she graduated from Yale University School of Art in New Haven, Connecticut, with an M.F.A. degree in painting.
