ABOUT LOULOU AND TUMMIE

Dutch illustrators Laurens (Loulou) and Chantal (Tummie), work together since 2004 from their hometown Tilburg, the Netherlands. They began their collaboration while sharing the same apartment and noticing they each had a style that could be a possible addition to one another. Indeed Loulou’s style is geometric and minimal while Tummie’s one is rich in cheerful and graceful patterns. Despite this, they found a common language, made of a world made of a craving for toys and robot-like characters.

Their universe is made of cheerful and colored characters that live in cities filled with machines, depicted with a simple yet thought-through style, where the many details are synthesized by the use of minimal colors.

WORK PROCESS

When it’s one illustration/print, Loulou works on it and Tummie works on the administration, promotion, or website and webshops. When there are bigger projects, like a big city map for example, or lots of icons, then they work on this together and merge them later on.

LouLou and Tummie always liked to make their own toys and stuff. It started with plush, t-shirts, and paper toys.

Tummie always loved sewing, and since they have kids she started sewing kids’ clothes. From here she thought of creating her own fabric and sew the clothes/plush and sell them online. Since it’s a side project and hobby that’s why they have a separate webshop. The same with Loulou’s workshop. This is a side project and hobby for Loulou. He loves working with wood in the shed and started woodturning and making his own wooden robots. They are for sale in very limited quantities on Loulou’s woodshop website whenever he finishes some.

On the Loulou & Tummie webshop, they mainly sell prints related to their illustration work. “We don’t want all this stuff together in one webshop because it’s too much, and with Tummietown we need to try to reach another audience as well.”

Their portfolio of work range between design for apps, advertising campaigns, books, toys, character design for games and patterns for bags, and their list of clients is very rich in big names such as Vodafone, Mercedes-Benz, Google, and Samsung. Besides they also work on personal projects such as wooden figures (Lulous Woodshop) and a line for kids clothing apparel (Tummietown).
